VOTO XO
Le Coffre-Fort (The Safe), 2023
This cabinet and safe solemnly stands in the center of The Queen Bee's Secret Chambers.
VOTO XO created this piece as a keystone of this chamber, between the treasure room and the data center, inhabited by Melitosfex, a half-bee, half-wasp queen. She is the testimony of a fictitious melliferous civilization, where the environment is constantly observed and the collected loot is stored for the survival of this thousand-year-old matriarch and its hive.
It is believed that bees appeared at the same time as flowers, in the Cretaceous geological period, long before humans. This cabinet of knowledge reflects the capacity to understand the territory and transmit information within the hives through a communication system that is still mysterious to humans today.

This is a research project about the narratives of the hive, real, fictional and hypothetical, the recognition of the technicality of their organization parallel to ours and the dependency to bees that we humans have today, due to their status of outstanding pollinators.
We chose to make this fictional project exist in the context of an interior architecture exhibition in order to deal with subjects that address a stronger connection to our environment. We are fascinated by the level of complexity, yet very organic existence, of the bee and the hive. Its body is alert, perceptive and capable. The tool-body is in contact with the harvest which is transformed in turn into food, medicine, construction material, weapon of defense.
Slightly open, imposing and yet floating, this piece of furniture is the mysterious piece that attracts us to the back of the sacred room. What is it hiding? We won't know—Melitosfex, the Queen Bee jealously guards her secrets. Its metal body is patinated and protected by wax, reflecting the tones and movements of the room, without ever perfectly transcribing them.
